Another professional basketball team in the NBA, the Charlotte Hornets (now known as the New Orleans Hornets) were once based in Charlotte, North Carolina. They started playing as an expansion franchise during the NBA season of 1988 to 1989, and basically played in the Midwest, Central and Atlantic divisions. After moving to New Orleans subsequent to the NBA season in 2001-2002, the Charlotte Hornets were renamed the New Orleans Hornets to this day. The team was founded through the efforts of a North Carolinian entrepreneur, George Shinn, who brought together an assembly of famous businessmen in the locality to spearhead the forthcoming franchise of an NBA team based in the Charlotte area.
