Now known as the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Seattle SuperSonics were once based in Seattle, Washington and played in the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Pacific and Northwest Divisions. They existed as the Seattle SuperSonics from 1967 until 2008 when they finally moved to Oklahoma City and changed their name to their present title. The team is one of the only two professional sports team based in Seattle who has won a championship game. The Basketball Club of Seattle, together with Barry Ackerley, once owned the SuperSonics. Sam Schulman was also the franchise’s owner from the year it was founded until 1983. It was bought by Clay Bennett in 2006, and later on was relocated to Oklahoma City because of the lack of funds for the construction of a new arena in Seattle for their home base.
